On the 10th of September 2020, EERAdata participated in a virtual roundtable, organised within the framework of the WHY project kick-off meeting, to discuss the socio-economic benefits of energy efficiency and how H2020 projects can support European policy making.
It was a privilege for EERAdata to present the project and its findings in this European-wide, virtual roundtable. We had the opportunity to explore how the project’s objectives and outcomes will contribute to, and support European policymaking, especially in post-COVID-19 times. A particular focus was placed on the environmental and socio-economic aspects of building assessment in the project’s three pilot local authorities, the City of Copenhagen, the Andalusian Energy Agency and the Municipality of Velenje.
The session brought together many projects funded under the same call – ENEFIRST, sEENergies, NEWTRENDS, WHY, MICAT, REFEREE and EERAdata– and focused on the role that these projects play in shaping the Recovery Fund and their links with the new Green Deal.
The meeting was also attended by the head of the H2020 Energy Unit, Vincent Berrutto (EASME), and by policy officers from the Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER), Macjej Grzeszcyk and Carlos Sánchez Rivero, who gave welcoming keynote speeches to introduce the objectives of the funding programme and the policy framework.
The event was a great opportunity to listen to the promising approaches that the other projects have on how to integrate socio-economic factors into building-related energy efficiency. These unique ideas and interactions have paved the way for future collaborations.

About The European Green Deal
Climate change and environmental degradation are an existential threat to Europe and the world. To overcome these challenges, the EU has developed a new growth strategy to make Europe climate neutral, improve the well-being of people, and secure a healthy planet for future generations.
The main goals of the Deal are to:
- Become climate neutral with no net emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050
- Protect human life, animals and plants by cutting pollution
- Help companies become world leaders in clean products and technologies
- Help ensure a just and inclusive transition, where no one is left behind
The European Green Deal is a plan to make the EU’s economy sustainable, and it can only be done by turning climate and environmental challenges into opportunities, and making the transition just and inclusive for all.
